Diferencias en el tono narrativo de películas contemporáneas de Marvel y DC: Iron Man (2008) y Man of Steel (2013)

Abstract

El presente trabajo compara las semejanzas y diferencias entre los estilos narrativos de las películas Iron Man (2008) y Man of Steel (2013) como películas pioneras de sus respectivos universos fílmicos. Esto con el objetivo de aportar un enfoque y visión críticos acerca de cómo se utiliza el tono narrativo dentro del género de superhéroes, a través de la comparación de la primera película del Universo cinematográfico de Marvel y la primera del Universo Extendido de DC. De este modo, el análisis permite comprender de qué forma las decisiones narrativas moldean el significado de estas historias, y aportan al desarrollo técnico de ambas producciones. Para ello, se utilizó una metodología de carácter cualitativo y de tipo descriptivo, sustentada en un método de análisis que consiste en tres fases. La primera fase es una ficha técnica de cada película que incluye aspectos como la sinopsis, año de la película, director, género, entre otros. La segunda fase se trata de un análisis cinematográfico con la ayuda de tablas divididas en cinco categorías como narración, dramaturgia, dirección de fotografía, dirección de arte, y sonido; a su vez cada una de estas categorías contiene otras subcategorías a analizar. Finalmente, la tercera fase consiste en un análisis interdisciplinario en el que se observa cómo estas películas trascienden su discurso fuera del cine y causan impacto en otras áreas y contextos. Los resultados indican que ambas películas tuvieron un enfoque narrativo y técnico bastante diferente desde la preproducción y estructura de la historia en guión, hasta el aspecto visual y el tono narrativo de ambas cintas. Además, fueron estrenadas en distintos contextos y cada una tuvo sus respectivos desafíos. No obstante, se determinó que Iron Man (2008) gestionó de mejor manera su lenguaje cinematográfico y manejó un tono narrativo más acertado. Por su parte, el tono más oscuro y serio que manejó Man of Steel (2013), fue bien recibido por una parte de la audiencia, pero a su vez criticado por otra.

This paper compares the similarities and differences between the narrative styles of the films Iron Man (2008) and Man of Steel (2013) as pioneering films of their respective cinematic universes. The aim is to provide a critical perspective on how narrative tone is used within the superhero genre, through a comparison of the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first in the DC Extended Universe. In this way, the analysis allows us to understand how narrative choices shape the meaning of these stories and contribute to the technical development of both productions. To this end, a qualitative and descriptive methodology was used, based on an analytical method consisting of three phases. The first phase is a technical data sheet for each film, including aspects such as the synopsis, year of release, director, genre, and others. The second phase involves a film analysis using tables divided into five categories: narrative, dramaturgy, cinematography, art direction, and sound. Each of these categories contains further subcategories for analysis. Finally, the third phase consists of an interdisciplinary analysis that examines how these films transcend their narrative and impact other areas and contexts. The results indicate that both films had quite different narrative and technical approaches, from pre-production and screenplay structure to the visual aspect and narrative tone. Furthermore, they were released in different contexts, each facing its own challenges. However, it was determined that Iron Man (2008) managed its cinematic language better and employed a more effective narrative tone. Meanwhile, the darker and more serious tone of Man of Steel (2013) was well-received by some audiences but criticized by others.
